Remembering ...

Photographs are useful for bringing back memories ... such as the run-on winter we had in 2014. But this winter wasn't as downright godawful nasty as bad as back in 77 - when my fuel oil gelled in the middle of the night because it was about -20 f and the furnace died from fuel starvation. As I recall, the temperature remained * below zero * throughout January. There was also about 20 inches of snow on the ground. Ice on the streets and sidewalks was hard as granite here in the Cincinnati area. Yes, it was worse that year. The Ohio River froze solid and things like fuel oil couldn't make the barge trips up/down the river. I seem to recall that the U.S. Army CofE had to dynamite huge ice jams at Markland Dam. Without going on and on about that, lets leave it as ... this winter was annoying but that winter was seriously dangerous in many respects. The river, in January 2014 nearly froze all the way across. Well, lets just say, I'm glad we have the Winter of 2014 behind us.

Dad's Trusty Barlow

Framed on tripod, here I'm using my dad's aged, hand-me-down Barlow knife. I'm cutting belt slots in a sheath that I was making for my aging Estwing hatchet.

Cabana On The River

Well, this is not an ad. But when I enjoy a place, I often blog about it - as in the case of Cabana On The River, next to Fernback Park on the Ohio River. Over on Cincinnati's west side, it's tween Sayler Park and Addyston. On a splendid Wednesday afternoon and, due to some misjudgements, we arrived somewhat after most everyone was off work or going home from work. We found a full house, usually a good testimonial for an eatery. So, we had to wait a bit longer to have a table on the river but it was certainly worth the wait. A beautiful sky, an unusually cool wind, and a beautiful view of the river provided an excellent atmosphere. The meal and service was very good and we'll certainly return again. Some pix:
